Explore math- and science-related concepts and techniques drawn from everyday life around the world. Using simple, inexpensive materials, teachers join students in making and using information-gathering tools, identifying patterns, interpreting data, and using logic to unravel puzzles.
Activities based on the Mayan calendar, the Chinese tea ceremony, African sand drawings and Madagascar Solitaire embody the hands-on, minds-on learning experience for which the Exploratorium is known. By exploring this kind of "real-life" math and science, students gain awareness of multicultural issues and an understanding of the day-to-day relevance of math and science for people of all backgrounds.
Dozens of photos illustrate the topics explored, and detailed instructions guide students through the discovery process. Suggestions for additional experiments and projects encourage students to explore further. All the activities have been tested on students, and all use inexpensive, readily available materials.
